Trendy in trench coats
Our everyone's favorite child
Now we know that we shouldn't favor one child over the others, but then our trench coat MUST simply give the others a chance. It's one of the most popular, classic and timeless coats ever, and it's definitely a wardrobe must-have in the transition to and from summer.
Read on as we take a closer look at the trench coat; how it came to be, the classic characteristics, styling options and much more within the trench coat universe.
From the battlefield to Vogue
The trench coat was born in the 1800s. It arose in response to rubber raincoats that were completely windproof and waterproof on the outside, but not breathable, so that you typically got wet on the inside of the coat. Here, John Emary of Aquascutum further developed a waterproof wool coat, which formed the basis of the trench coat we know today. This waterproof wool coat was later further developed by Thomas Burberry in 1879, who invented the gabardine fabric, which was resistant to harsh weather conditions while being breathable.
The outerwear was particularly popular among the upper classes, but was especially popularized during World War I, when the trench coat was used by men in the British Army - it was also the use in military service that resulted in the name "trenchcoat" in 1916, which translates to "trench coat". However, the name is misleading, as the coats were not worn by men in the trenches, but were worn by higher-ranking officers.
However, the coat gained its great popularity through Hollywood, and from there it took off. With its design that could easily be adapted to the female figure, women also adopted the trench coat, and it has now developed into a must-have in every woman's transitional wardrobe.
Trench coat in the wardrobe
We think the biggest characteristic of the trench coat is that it is totally fabulous, but perhaps we should also come up with a slightly more objective description of what a typical trench coat looks like.
The regular trench coat will be made of a thin and lightweight, waterproof material, making it an ideal transitional jacket. It will usually have a lapel collar with a windbreaker and a button closure. However, the latter is no longer a given, as modern cape trench coats, which are simply closed with a tie, are gaining ground in the fashion world.
In addition, the traditional trench coat will have a belt or tie at the waist, and there will be straps around the wrists and shoulders. The length itself is very variable and will go from mid-thigh to below the knee. There are also many models and cuts, which helps to make the coat so versatile. As mentioned, there is the classic model that we have described, but here you can choose to wear single or double-breasted (i.e. whether you want a single or two rows of buttons), short, long, oversized or a cape trench coat. Traditionally, a trench coat is black, gray, beige or khaki, but they are available in all kinds of colors, and it is becoming more common to see trench coats in other colors and even in different patterns. So we are talking about one coat with many expressions, where there should be one for everyone.
How to style your trench coat
The big question is, how do you style your trench coat? And we understand if someone asks, because with a trench coat, the possibilities are many! We are dealing with a versatile coat that can be styled with most things and for most occasions - from everyday life to parties.
If you want to stand out at work and in your free time, it might be worth considering wearing it home with a stylish look, achieved through a classic-looking trench coat. It can be styled with a nice shirt and a pair of cool suit trousers to achieve a stylish look that exudes confidence and power.
If you are considering how to best create a party outfit for going out or for special occasions in general, we would just like to say that there is room for choosing a more modern-looking trench coat. Here you can go with an oversized trench coat without a tie or a cape trench coat. Consider a trench coat in a different color than the traditional ones, because this is the season when you can really experiment with this. In addition, it is almost free how you want to style your party outfit to match your trench coat - you can go all the way with a lovely dress , or you can go with a nice top with some nice pants or an elegant skirt . The possibilities are many, and basically your trench coat will match your favorite party outfit.
