The history of Halloween

We all think that Halloween probably comes from the United States, where the holiday is especially celebrated today, but in fact the holiday originates from the Celts in Europe around 900 BC. Here, Halloween (also called Samhain, the festival of the sun) was the equivalent of the Celtic New Year and a celebration of the end of summer. Therefore, people worshipped the sun god, Baal, but that was not the only one; they also worshipped the ruler of the underworld in order to get him to let the dead of the year visit their families. Evil spirits that would possess living bodies the next year could also risk passing by, and therefore people would dress up in the most frightening and hideous costume they could muster, as this would both deter the evil spirits from possession and from causing trouble. That is where the tradition of dressing up comes from.
Druids would also burn women who were believed to be witches on large pyres, and in the meantime, stories would be told of supernatural events, strange visions, etc., which is believed to have created the foundation for the trend of telling spooky stories for Halloween today.

About 150 years ago, Halloween began to take shape in America as a slightly more sinister variant of Mardi Gras, where children beg for candy with the famous phrase "Trick or treat", understood as meaning that trouble will ensue if candy does not fall. Here it is also standard to decorate in a scary way and have your carved pumpkins to decorate by the front door.

Halloween really made its way into Denmark in the late 1990s, and statistics indicate that more than 1/4 of all Danish households with children living at home go trick or treating, and the figures for candy and decorations also indicate that Halloween is gradually surpassing Fastelavn.

And it suits us perfectly that Halloween has made this entry, because what a festive occasion with many possibilities for celebration. We will take you through some ideas on how you can celebrate the evening and how you can dress for it.

The Halloween party

A great way to spend Halloween is by going to or hosting a party yourself. There are two ways to go: a completely spooky costume (which we of course applaud) and a nice, festive outfit (which we of course also applaud!).
A classic for the party will of course be a nice dress in a neutral color, perhaps black, beige or silver, if it is to be especially festive. Here you can take a look at our range of party dresses . An alternative, which may be less formal, but just as stylish, would be to match a pair of suit trousers with a nice top . Cute and simple, you can hardly go wrong!

Girlfriend dinner

Halloween is also a great opportunity to invite your friends over for a nice dinner and maybe a few drinks. Here you can go all in with the decorations to make it a bit festive, and of course you should also wear a stylish outfit. Here you can very appropriately wear a nice set that is perhaps more casual than if it had been a real party, for example. a suit for women consisting of suit trousers and a blazer would give a really nice look and be comfortable at the same time. Under the blazer you will be able to wear both a nice blouse and a shirt .

Movie (un)hygge

A super-appropriate way to spend Halloween is of course a movie date, where you watch some spooky movies with either a friend or someone who is perhaps a little cuter than all the others. The latter is especially obvious if you turn up the spookiness on the screen, as in that case you can justifiably creep a little closer to each other.
Here, comfort and coziness are the most important things, and here we will point out one of the biggest trends of the fall: Knitwear ! Whether it's a knit dress or a knit sweater over a pair of comfortable pants, it will definitely be a good outfit for this kind of Halloween celebration. Oh, and don't forget the candles to turn up the coziness and the spookiness.

With love,
